Jackfruit the Official Fruit of Jackson Heights

Jack Fruit of Jackson HtsFor the past several years at this time of year I have seen the arrival of the wild  and exotic looking Jackfruit in many of the South Asian grocery stores of Jackson Heights, NY. I am sure I am not the first that its name rang a bell, and shouted out “Jack” and “Jackson” a marriage made in heaven I thought. So this year I am going out on a limb and proclaiming the “Jackfruit the Official Fruit of Jackson Heights”.

The jackfruit tree is widely cultivated in tropical regions of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Jackfruit is also found across Africa, e.g., in Cameroon, Uganda, Tanzania, and Mauritius, as well as throughout Brazil and Caribbean nations such as Jamaica.
